In 1870, settlers began arriving from all over Russia via seal ship seeking passage to California; many came through Kotzebue Sound on their way downriver to Valdez before reaching Anchorage about September 15th 1870. In 1902, construction began on what would become known as Kaktovik Airport; this was later renamed for Ivan Turgenev, author of Fathers and Sons (1880). At that time Anchorage had a population of only hundred people due largely to seasonal migration from other parts of Kuskokwim County for work on various projects
