One of the first businesses to be established in Anchorage was a bootblack shop named J&B’s which sold pistols and shotguns. In 1898, BB guns became popularized after a shooting at an Anna River fairgrounds left three people dead and nine injured. In 1903, two brothersnamed Johnnie and Harvey licensed themselves as Armsmiths & Pistolsmiths at 2nd Avenue South and Seward Street in downtown Anchorage. They soon started producing high-quality BBguns for civilians and law enforcement officers. The company’s success led them to expand their business into other areas of firearms production including rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and ammunition products. In 1922, while still presided over by Johnnie & Harvey Armsmiths, their son Harry bought out his father’s shares in the company making him sole owner and controller of the business affairs from then on until his death in 1947. Harry continued to produce high-qualityBBguns until his own death in 1961 aged 89 years old. His son Harry Jr., who succeeded him as CEO of Harry Hogg BBguns Incorporated continued running the company for 16 years before he too passed away in 1978 aged 88 years old leaving it once again into the hands of his sons Bobby (brought up at home) who took over management when Junior died suddenly at age 50 years old having been CEO since 1969; finally Ted (the current CEO) took charge upon Sr.'s death having been Vice President during Sr.'s lifetime

The traders continued to visit Kodiak for years, but they never developed a permanent settlement because of the hostile environment. In 1892, a group of American businessmen began exploring the southeast corner of Alaska and discovered gold fields. They erected buildings on Kodiak Island and started trading with Russia. By 1905, however,mining operations on Kodiak had ceased due to competition from other interests in the area. In 1916, Captain John Denny chartered a ship called Empireada to prospect for gold on Kodiak Island. After finding no gold worth exploiting, Denny abandoned his investment and returned home without ever landing on Kodiak Island again. In 1955, when Soviet Union troops invaded neighboring Siberia to suppress pro-independence sentiment there, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered US Marines stationed at McKinley Barracks in Anchorage to open fire upon any demonstrators that emerged from within the city limits (this event is sometimes incorrectly referred to as "The Battle of Anchorage"). Though outnumbered several times over by vastly more Soviet soldiers and sailors (the Marines were composed overwhelmingly of reservists), these Americans fought bravely against overwhelming odds and kept their city under control until May 8th when orders arrived from Moscow ordering them unconditionally withdrawing all forces northward; this stand symbolized the end of World War II in North America & set off what has been described as one of history's most dramatic moments - an event which also helped solidify American sovereignty over Alaskan land
