The area now known as Vestavia Hills was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1834, Vestavia Hills was organized as a town under the name of "Jeffersonville". The first post office in Vestavia Hills opened in 1851. By 1860, vestavias had become one of the largest and most important towns in Jefferson County. In 1927, Vestavia Hills became an incorporated city with its own government and mayor. That year saw the opening of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), which would later become one of America's top universities. In 1965, UAB merged with nearby Tuskegee Institute to form what is now known as "Alabama State University". Today, vestavias are home to many high-tech companies and colleges such as UAB and Tuskegee Institute; affluent neighborhoods such as Sandtown Village; and several small villages near downtown that maintain close ties to their rural origins. There are also several large shopping malls located throughout the city limits

Vestavia Hills is known as the home of Generous Moore School and many other famous schools in America such as Tuskegee Airmen Academy, which is also home to the world's second black engineering school, and Mountaintop Academy. The area that now makes up Vestavia Hills was first settled by white farmers in 1800. By 1820, however, African Americans had begun to arrive here from Georgia and south Alabama. As the slaves who worked on these farms grew more numerous, they began to demand their own rights as citizens. In 1829, a group of citizens banded together to form a local militia in order to protect themselves from slave catchers. This helped lead to Vestavia Hills becoming one of the most active African American communities in America during this time period. In 1860, when Confederate General Robert E Lee decided to start a fight with Union forces outside Birmingham because he felt that slavery should be kept alive in northern states despite its unpopularity among many people across North America (including many people living near Birmingham), Vestavia Hills chose not to fight alongside their fellow southern counties. This decision cost them much honor within their community and may have saved their city from annexation by Birmingham during that year’s Civil War. However, after Confederate General Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865, all vestavihillians were required by federal law to leave their homes within ninety days or face deportation back into slavery – an experience some still carry around today! After Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, vestavihillians turned their attention back towards building new lives hereabouts. This led to several businesses emerging throughout Vestavia Hills over ensuing years: Generous Moore School was founded in 1916; Mountaintop Academy opened its doors in 1925; and finally Tuscaloosa State University became a reality in 1963-4! With so much progress being made throughout these years – both for everyone involved AND for Vestavia Hills itself – it would be difficult notto overlook how very special this community truly is!
