Vestavia Hills is a census-designated place in Vestavia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 4,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Vestavia Hills was founded in 1892 by white men from Shelby County and is named after Gadsden County, Alabama's first county seat. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the main north-south road between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. By 1938, Vestavia Hills had over 1,000 residents and had annexed much of nearby Greenville County. In 1945, Vestavia Hills became one of six places in Alabama designated as " Urban Areas" for cities with populations over 50,000 that were not already served byurban areas established within city limits. In 2000, Vestavis merged with neighboring White Hall to form a single municipality with a population of over 100,000 people. The current incarnation of Vestavia Hills began to form following the end of World War II when many post-war veterans returned home to find their once small towns and villages had been transformed into sprawling suburbs full of new homes and businesses. The largest single piece of this transformation came in the late 1950s when General Motors announced it would build a large plant in whitehall which would create nearly 2,000 jobs directly associated with the production line jobs that GM built throughout southern Alabama during its heyday as an American auto company. This development led to what has come to be known as "the green belt" phenomenon; suburbanites moving back into previously inner-city neighborhoods outside Birmingham or Tuscaloosa because they could no longer afford high property values inside those districts without also purchasing land elsewhere within town Limits).
