Vestavia Hills is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. Vestavia Hills was founded in 1892 by John Pemberton and his brothers-in-law, George Washington Caddy and James Hogg. The name "Vestavia" derived from an Indian word meaning "land of my fathers." In 1905, Vestavia Hills merged with the neighboring town of Decatur to form one municipality. On February 15, 1907, Vestavia Hills incorporated as a city under the name "Vestavia Hills". In 1938 the city changed its name to "Mobile County" after being chosen as the location for what would be then known as the Alabama State Capitol Building. The current building was completed in 1960 and served as both county courthouse and state capitol until it burned down in 1984. The city hosted its first professional football game on October 7th 1927 when Montgomery County (now Birmingham) played Vestavia Hills (then Selma) Tigers in what is now known as the Cotton Bowl Classic rivalry game. At that time Mobile County had no team playing professional football so this was also their first ever meeting outside of their home county which they lost 10-3
The Vestavia Hills community was founded in 1892 by white farmers on the east side of Birmingham, Alabama. The original settlers were Methodist George and Martha Fields. The community name derived from a nearby mountain, Vestavia Hill. The first post office in the community was established in 1893. In 1915, Vestavia Hills became an incorporated town with a population of about 2,000 people.
