Vestavia Hills, Alabama is a city located in Vestavia County, Alabama. The population was 23,611 as of the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated municipality in Vestavia Hills. The history of Vestavia Hills goes back to 1892 when two brothers named John and James Pemberton founded the town on land that they had donated to the community. Vestavia Hills is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 25,324 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Jefferson County after Birmingham. The first mention of Vestavia Hills as a place name comes from DeKalb County's 1818 plat map which calls it "Vestavia". It appears to be derived from the Creek word "havasu" meaning "a meadow by a stream". In 1834, Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States and his inauguration took place at Old Muhammad Ali Mosque in Montgomery where he was received with great acclaim by many in Alabama including Vestavia Hills citizens who had gathered for an outdoor dinner party that evening. The event was recorded and published by Martin Van Buren who also served as Governor of Alabama at the time. One account has it that General John Custer passed through Vestavia Hills on his way to Mobile Bay on December 15th, 1840 while leading his forces during the Mexican–American War. A plaque located at UAB says: "Here Custer stopped before marching into Mexico." This story may have been based on historical fact but there is no evidence to support it. In 1881, Vestavia Hills became one of six towns inJefferson County when portions were detached from Montgomery County. At that time white residents numbered only about 10% of the population and black residents made up almost 60%. The town's growth came primarily from its agricultural base which included cotton farming, livestock raising and dairy production until World War II when steel production took over as the primary focus of vestavhills economy.Today, Vestavia Hills remains an important center for education and industry within Jefferson County with several high-tech companies headquartered there such as Intel Xeon processors and AMD Radeon graphics cards among others; all contributing to its current urban growth rate which rivals or exceeds that seen within Birmingham overall.

The town was named for Colonel James Fenton vest-a-hills (shire) – a hill belonging to said colonel –Near which we had abundance of water supply & plenty of game both public and private.–This place being situated on an elevated tract of land not subject to much cultivation or improvement having been given it principally for military purposes.–In order that young gentlemen may have opportunity to learn something about their country’s history before they return home I will state here that our first commander in this District Ulysses S Grant who succeeded Colonel Fenton was a native & citizen of Athens,Ga., one thousand seven hundred fifty nine years ago! Vestavia Hills began as a small agricultural colony called Vestavia Springs near Huntsville, Alabama. It grew quickly due to its location on an elevated tract of land with easy access to water and abundant resources. By 1907, the name change came about because General William T Sherman visited the area during his visit to Huntsville that year. At its peak there were 10,000 residents in 1950 but this number has decreased over time due to factors such as economic decline and retirements among those living there today.

By 1892, Vestavia Hills had reached its current size with over 1,000 residents. In addition to its physical development, Vestavia Hills experienced social changes as well during its early years. For example, due to increasing racial tension in Alabama at that time, many African Americans were forced out of their homes and into poverty for fear of being lynched or worse. This period also saw important educational opportunities available toouth vestavihillsians and helped form future leaders within the community.
