Vestavia Hills is a city in central Alabama, United States. The population was 15,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vestavia County. The community was named after General Robert E. Lee and his wife, Julia Macee Custis Lee. Vestavia Hills was founded in 1867 by John Tilton on land acquired from the Creek Nation. On July 4, 1907, Vestavia Hills became a town when it annexed the towns of Enterprise and Pinsonville. The Vestavia Hills Gun Club was organized in 1896. The club met at the home of J.C. Hargrave until 1906, when they moved to their current location on Glenwood Drive. The club has since grown and met outside of town several times, but always within the boundaries of Vestavia Hills.

By the late 18th century, several different types of firearms had been invented. The most popular type at this time was the muzzle-loading rifle, which fired a projectile by means of an air-gauge system. A variety of loadings were used, including powder shot and ball. In 1794, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed and built the world’s first breechloader rifle – the carbine. This weapon fired a cartridge through a metal tube inserted into the receiver below the barrel. This allowed for greater range than previous methods and made it possible to fight against enemies on multiple fronts simultaneously. Additionally, this Weapon revolutionized warfare by allowing commanders to control their troops with greater precision while still having them open ranged against enemy forces
The NRA has been pushing for expanded gun rights since the early 1800s. In 1875, they were one of the first organizations to call for passage of a national Firearms Act, which would have legalized private sales and manufacture of handguns. The act was eventually passed, but not until 1934. This act granted more gun rights to civilians than those already given under the 1875 law. The NRA also played a role in helping pass the Brady Bill in 1993, which increased background checks on firearm purchases and created a system to tracking firearms deaths and injuries.

The town name comes from the Cherokee word for "hill" (vīstā), which is also where early residents named their businesses after local hills or mountains. The city's population passed 100,000 in 2000, making it one of America's fastest growing cities. It has undergone many renovations and expansions over its history, but its core remains unchanged: an open-air shopping mall with more than 20 stores and restaurants; two professional stadiums – Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field and Bryant–Denny Stadium at Six Flags Over Georgia – both used for football; a large outdoor park complete with tennis courts, playgrounds, lawn mowers, water cannons, rock climbing walls and more; and two high schools - Vestavia Hills High School and Hoover Valley High School - that serve students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Today's Vestavia Hills owes much to post-World War II migration: Many immigrants who had grown prosperous in their home countries came to work in Birmingham or Mobile during the postwar boom years of technology development. They brought their families with them, settling along Howell Mill Road between Ulysses Road and I-565 west of downtown Birmingham.
