Vestavia Hills is a city inJefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 19,752 at the 2010 census. Vestavia Hills is located on the eastern edge of the Birmingham metropolitan area and is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Huntsville–Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The first settlement in Vestavia Hills was made by white settlers in 1818 when they moved from Mobile Bay to what is now Vestavia Hills after purchasing land from the Creek people. The town name derived from Mount Vernon, Virginia, which was then a thinly populated region with few permanent residents because of its difficult terrain and harsh climate. A post office called Vestavia Springs was established in 1825, but it failed to take hold and was discontinued in 1828. In 1830, John Sevier organized a group of investors to purchase land east of present-day Beltway Rd., including what is now Vestavia Hills, for $1 per acre ($ Today: $ ). They named their new community "Vestavia" after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation (present day Fairfax Community College). The first school opened in Vestavia Hills on September 8, 1831 as Covington Academy under local teacher Andrew Greggs. In 1865, girls' schools were added to the mix as vestige of Reconstruction efforts to promote female education across racial lines. One impetus for this broader effort may have been concern about African Americans abandoning white communities during Reconstruction period due to fear that they would be taken advantage of by black power brokers seeking revenge or economic advantages. In 1907 Jens Jensen donated $5 million dollars towards building an elaborate lawn ornamentation complex known as "Jensen's Grove". The gift has been used by numerous private individuals and organizations over time including Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conductor Andre Previn who dedicated his memoir "Andre Previn—A Life" to Jensen in 2006; Decatur Mayor Jerry Dunn attended ceremony; and current Mayor Tommy Battle attended ribbon cutting ceremony alongside Mrs. Jensen upon her death on October 12th 2013 aged 86 years old

In the 1930s, Vestavia Hills became a concentrate point for African Americans working in the Birmingham-based steel mills and other industries. In 1986, Vestavis Gibson College opened in downtown Vestavia Hills and became one of America's first black colleges.
The Vestavia Hills community was established in the early 1920s, when a group of farmers bought land in what is now Vestavia Hills. The community was named for Colonel James Fenton, who donated the land to the town. In 1928, a golf course was built on the site and renamed Gator Country Club. Vestavia Hills became an official city in 1972, after being incorporated as a municipality by ordinance. The city annexed portions of Homewood in 1985 and 1991. In 2000, Vestavia Hills was named one of America's "Most Liveable Cities".
