Vestavia Hills is a city in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 12,055 at the 2010 census. Vestavia Hills is the principal town of the Vestavia Hills–Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area and forms an enclave within that area. The first people to live in what is now Vestavia Hills were Creek Indians who call it "Oo-Koo-aht" meaning "place where there are trees." In 1819, Colonel John Marshall founded Marshall's Colony on current day School Road in what is now Vestavia Hills. The original settlers were soldiers from Tennessee who decided to populate this new land after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Native American forces in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. A group of men led by Captain James Fenton bought 1,500 acres (490 ha) near present day US 69/7 north of today's University Park Mall for $5 per acre (2 ha). Fenton named his vast tract "The Hill". He also developed a mill which produced flour for local consumption and exported to Mobile and other parts of America. By 1830, population had rose to eighty souls and by 1840 it numbered 1,100 people with seventy-five families living on The Hill.
