Vestavia Hills is a city in Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 21,534 at the 2010 census. Vestavia Hills is home to the Vestavia Hills Academy and Vestavia Hills High School, both of which are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The city was founded in 1892 as a small farming town named Vestavia Springs. A post office was established there in 1893, and soon became a center for trade with areas around Mobile Bay. By 1901, vestaviahills had become an important political and commercial center due to its location on the East Alabama Railroad and its access to water resources from two rivers that emptied into Mobile Bay: the West Alabama River and the Ocmulgee River. In 1905, Vestavia Hills became one of four cities located in Marshall County – along with nearby Decatur (now part of Birmingham), Ensley (now part of Montgomery), and Tuscaloosa – when it was annexed by Mobile County. The annexation made Vestavia Hills one ofAlabama's first counties as well as one of its largest cities. According to local legend, Mayor George Washington Stephenson intentionally chose this designation because he believed that rural residents would move into centralMobile County while those living near major oil refineries would stay within their own communities. In 1912, when Mobile County formed from parts of Baldwin and Lauderdale counties after being created from federal land taken away during Reconstruction, vestaviahills quickly became one of its most important towns due to its location on US-4 between Mobile Bayou (west side) and Lookout MountainLake (east side).
