Vestavia Hills, an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Alabama, is a historic town located on the Vestavia Hills Parkway. It was founded in 1892 by General Ira W. Dixon and his wife, Nannie Webb Dixon, as a small plantation southeast of Montgomery. The area now includes Vestavia Hills and its surrounding hamlets of Canton Heights and Overton Park. In 1920, Vestavia Hills became the county seat of Montgomery County after it was moved from Selma to the new county seat. The population of Vestavia Hills declined during the 1930s and 1940s due to factors including World War II military housing restrictions, African American migration to cities such as Birmingham and Atlanta, racism in Montgomery County government institutions, and declines in farm production. However, during the 1960s–1970s many residents began moving back into vestavia hills because of its cultural significance as a center for black America; today it is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Alabama. In 1892 General Ira W. Dixon acquired 6 acres (2 ha) northeast of Montgomery for $800 cash from John Bassett Wallace Sr., who had purchased land east of that city for development into what would become Mobile Bayou City Limits Parish.[1] Dixon named his tract "Vestavia" after James A. Vestal—the first white settler in what would become Vestavia Hills—and son-in-law John Akins Wright (1849-1915), both natives of Virginia.[2][3] In 1907 Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of Tuskegee Institute (later Tuskegee University) on donated land near Tuskegee Airport outside Birmingham; this action created Alabama's first doctoral degree-granting institution,[4] making it possible for African Americans to study law or other higher education at white colleges while maintaining their social status within their own race orethnicity groups. As a result of these early successes, vestavians were known as "The Vests". During World War II beltway restrictions placed limitations on where soldiers could reside; therefore many veterans living east side Baltimore suburbs like Owings Mills decided to move back into their old homes that they had vacated during wartime[5][6]. While some residents did move away entirely during this time period,[7][8], others relocated back into their original neighborhoods only marginally modified by war zones or other changes wrought upon postwar America since then.[9] By 1947 over 60%of all households in vestavis resided within 1 mile (1 km)[10]of either downtown Bethesda or southern Metairie—a distance much greater than those currently residing within 1 mile (1 km) or less anywhere else in metropolitan Birmingham proper[11]. The area that now makes up Vestavia Hills was first settled by the Creek and Acolita Native Americans. The town of Vestavia Hills was named for General John C. Fremont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and saw action at Churubusco and Palo Alto on December 8, 1847. General Fremont had been elected governor of California just two weeks before his death at the Battle of Buena Vista on October 20th, 1848 while leading an army against Mexico City under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1892, Optimist Club member James Denton donated land to make way for what would become Vestavia Hills Cemetery which still stands today on Center Street between Winchester Boulevard and River Road East (now Goodson Boulevard). At the time it was one of the most prestigious cemeteries in Mobile County with over 2,000 gravesites! In 1914 VH began construction on its own municipal building which still stands to this day as community center #2! Vestavia Hills experienced some difficult times during World War II; however, through hard work and a determined Mayor James Ahern they were able to bounce back and thrive after the war ended. Today’s vestavia hills is known for its safe communities policies such as “No parking lot? No problem!” Allowing residents to park anywhere they like including within close walking distance of their homes!
The Vestavia Hills area was settled in the early 1800s by white people. By 1819, the region had become known as "the land of Chickasaw." The first white settler in what is now Vestavia Hills was Captain John Covington, who arrived in 1824. He named his land "Covington's Valley" after himself. In 1828, a group ofsixteen farmers and traders from Tennessee founded a town called Decatur on the east bank of the Alabama River. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson, who had been president during their time of growth.
