In 1865, Tuskegee Institute was founded in Alabama by Booker T. Washington. The institution aimed to provide education for African Americans and began offering free primary and secondary school education to black students in 1868. In 1916, the Tuskegee Air Force Base was established on a large tract of land in Tuskegee, Ala., which became home to the United States Air Force’s Wright-Patterson Airforce Base. The base manufactured and tested aerial vehicles such as fighter planes and bombers during World War II. Today, the institute is an all-black research university with a college of engineering that offers undergraduate degrees in business, science, management and social work; graduate degrees in law, medicine, dentistry and podiatric surgery; and postgraduate degree programs in computer science (MS), information technology (IT) and teaching (TUSKEGEE TECH).
