Tuskegee University was established in 1881 and became a world-renowned research institution for education, medical research, and technology. Ammunition is an essential part of the university’s history, as it has been used to defend Tuskegee from enemies both foreign and domestic since its inception. The first ammunition manufactured in Alabama was shot by students at the school in 1884. The company that manufactured these rounds was called “Erie Arsenal.” The first real ammunition production of note took place at the town of Stillwater in 1903 when American munitions manufacturer Remington Manufacturing Company produced projectiles made from black powder and steel with a muzzle velocity of 860 fps. This new type of projectile quickly replaced lead ball cartridges with greater accuracy. During World War II, ammunition production increased significantly at Tuskegee University as the university became engaged in many weapons programs including artillery, rocketry, aircraft design, and tanks. Ammunition also played an important role during the Korean War as it was utilized to fire bombs and rockets into enemy lines for infantry support. In 1978, NRA member Drury Sperry began manufacturing high-velocity rifle rounds using black powder instead of white powder which allowed for increased accuracy and range while still providing protection against damage from enemy fire. Some also went on to work for businesses or opened their own businesses after leaving the military.
Tuskegee Institute was founded in 1881 by Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe and his associate, Tuskegee Air Force Base Commander Lt. Col. Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a scientific research center for the study of aviation.
