Tuscaloosa is a city in Alabama, United States. It was incorporated as a town on November 1, 1867, and it became an independent city on December 4, 1907. The population was 97,569 at the 2010 census. One of these settlers was John Covington who founded Covington Station on January 24, 1819. The Town of Covington was chartered on October 3rd of that year by Judge James Ritchie with a land grant from King George III of England to John Cushingon as part of his efforts to promote English settlement in this area along Mobile Bayou (now Muskegon River). Covington Station served as a trading post between British traders and local native nations until it closed its doors in 1837 due to competition from more established settlements along Mobile Bayou including Cahaba Junction (now Huntsville), later renamed Fort Payne and eventually Tuskegee University when it opened its doors in 1901. With little development occurring within the town itself until after World War II when many young people left for military service or other opportunities overseas, many residents assumed that nothing would happen in downtown Tuscalooso during those years either! However much has changed since then! On January 24th, 1898 – just seven months before Birmingham’s incorporation into Alabama – Mayor David Witherspoon proclaimed “January 24th Anniversary Celebration” throughout downtown Birmingham so that all citizens were made aware of how important their presence had been within that short time frame during history! That same year saw the opening of Union Depot which allowed goods travelling northward out of Birmingham onto Interstate 10 directly into Montgomery without having to go through Mobile or Auburn! This development helped contribute greatly toward reversing some serious economic problems plaguing those cities at that time! Additionally, construction continued apace throughout 1998 – 1999 resulting in new office buildings (including one known today as Capitol Square) as well as several commercial districts around downtown including Vine Street SW & First Avenue NE . Downtown also experienced significant growth with both residential developments such as Checkerboard Plaza and retail additions such as Sears Phase I & II/Shine Place NW .
