On April 12, 1865 – one day after Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House – Union soldiers burn down Tuscarora's only building: a schoolhouse used by Union forces during their occupation while they were besieging Tuscarora (the building still stands). This event helped contribute to increased international attention given toAlabama following the war; it remains oneofAlabama's most significant historical accomplishments During World War II, aluminum production facilities were built within downtown Tuscaloosa by Hall-Scott Corporation (now Lockheed Martin) due to advances made regarding aluminum alloys during World War II (hall- Scott also manufactured tanks for US military service). These plants produced over 100% aluminum products until 1990 when they closed because aluminium prices rose too high relative to other materials throughout history
