Trussville is a small town in central Alabama that was founded by General James H. Truss on the banks of Mobile Bay in 1819. The town became an important center for cotton production, and its industry helped make Trussville one of the most prosperous towns in Alabama during the antebellum period. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Trussville was plowed under by Union soldiers as part of a military campaign to destroy Confederate munitions caches. Although much damage was done, few buildings remained standing after the war. Today, Trussville is a small community with a population of just over 1,000 people. The history of Trussville began with its founding by General James H. Trussell on the banks of Mobile Bay in 1819. At that time, Mobile County was only a tiny outpost within what would become Alabama. As cotton crops developed along the Gulf Coast, traders and entrepreneurs saw opportunity in this new crop and created communities around it to support their businesses and families. One such entrepreneur was Colonel John Gregg who built his own plantation near present-day Trussville and named it Greggstown after himself and his father-in-law Patrick Gregg (1789-1864). The growth of eastern Tennessee coal mining prompted Colonel Gregg to move his operations westward into what is now central Alabama in 1825; he named his new development West Point after President George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate near Alexandria, Virginia (now Arlington National Cemetery). Although Company G had been established at Mobile before Captain William Folsom arrived there October 25th,. 1811 as Sergeant Major Upson's company A1 under Captains Wm T Jones (c), John Smith(d) & LtCol David Baird(e), they all volunteered together when ordered to march from Pensacola Florida on December 15th against Admiral Perry's squadron commanded by Commodore Matthew Cate which had sailed up Chesapeake Bay November 3rd\. They reached Pensacola February 17th,. but put down their arms because they wouldn't join any other battalion participating in Nelson's Invasion Force which included 6 companies from Companies I(), J*, K*& L*[]. All except 2 Captains were courtmartialed for desertion including Wm T Jones ................................. Court Martial record: "Wm T Jones - Discharged without Leave" .......................... He served two months 9 days then quit for lackading food rations & being too sick........... Another day out sick led him back inside .................................. After nine weeks return he again applied for leave taking personal effects with him.......................Captain William Folsom -approved application January 12th 1861 ..............In answer toApplication form dated January 12th 1861 "I take leave my honorable friends not having anything else immediate pressing upon me" ...................... This means that Captain William Folsom did not think Captain Wm TJones' request amounted to desertion ..........Court Martial Record: "Wm T Jones - Discharged without Leave"
The Trussville community is located in Trussville, Alabama and was founded by the railroad company in 1885. The town was named after Captain John A. Truss and his family who helped build the railroad. The community grew quickly with businesses such as a mill, a grocery store, and a post office being established. In 1951, the city of Trussville merged with neighboring Decatur to form what is now known as Birmingham.
