Trussville is a city in and the county seat of Trussville County, Alabama, United States. The population was 118,746 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The history of Trussville goes back to 1817 when General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded what is now Alabama and captured Fort Gaines on the Mobile River. This event helped lead to Jackson's becoming president in 1828. The arrival of railroads in this region during the early 19th century caused businesses to relocate from downtown Trussville to new areas such as East End, Central Park, and West End. These developments led to increased development around Railroad Row and other commercial districts that remain today. The first school in Trussville was built on what is now Spring Street in 1819 by Methodist parents under instruction from Reverend Drury & Mrs David Parrish. In 1837, President James Kenedy established Jacksonville University with land donated by prominent local resident Major John Kirby Blackledge. After Kenedy's death in 1840, university operations were taken over by a board of trustees appointed by Governor Buford Posey. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell took control of Mobile Bay and decided that Pensacola should be his capital instead of Montgomery due to its strategic location within Confederate territory at that time. As a result, Pensacola became the capital city for much of south-central Alabama following its fall from power in 1865. In 1870s some investors purchased land east of Railroad Row which would become known as "the City". They renamed it Trussville after Samuel S Truman (1805-68), an investor who had contributed $5,000 towards construction of the railroad between Decatur and Tuscaloosa Junction - oneofthe earliest successful railways west of the Appalachian Mountains (). Truman had been instrumental in gettingAlabama statehood via a popular vote on November 3, 1901; he also served as governor from 1907 until 1911 under then-Governor George Wallace (). The name "Trussville" was derived from the Creek Indian word "'trusewal", meaning "headquarters". As early as 1835, commissioners ordered surveys to be made of all sections in the area and it became clear that there were several headings for the town site: 1) East (now downtown), 2) Northwest (later known as North Park), 3) West (now east side of town), and 4) Southwestern (now southern edge). In 1839 a post office was established at Trussville with John Hinson as first Postmaster. In 1847 work began on building what would become known as the courthouse which opened in 1850. The city limits were expanded by adding land to the northwest side of town in 1876. In 1899, when Birmingham consolidated with Alabama, Trussvlle became its new county seat. The economy of Trusvlle has been diversified over time including manufacturing and agriculture; however heavy industry ended during World War II due to production shortages caused by war efforts everywhere in America. Today, downtown areas such as Main Street and State Street are home to numerous businesses including restaurants and bars along with several large retailers like Macy's Department Store and JCPenney Jr./Hancock Incorporated complex. In addition to being one of the most active Uptown districts in Montgomery proper – anchored by clustered blocks of high-end office space – two blocks east of City Hall offers a mix of retail stores plus several hundred residential units dating back to early 20th century revivalism known as Aerial City developments program which included high-rise apartment buildings reaching up into the sky at midtown levels overlooking downtown streetscape
