Gun swivels were first patented in 1892 by Dr. George Weismann and Mr. Wm. Ewing of Trussville, Alabama. In 1951, Mr. Harry Janssen designed and patented a firearm requiring no tool to change the barrel orientation on a gun that utilized a gun swivel as its mechanism. The patent was filed under the name “Janssen Gun Swivel” In 1957, John Troup patented an improved version of the gun swivel that allowed for faster loading/unloading of shotguns while maintaining accurate shooting results with certain types of shotguns utilizing choke tubes or other features specific to those shotguns. This invention was known as the Troup Gun Swivel and is still used today on some shotgun models

Trussville, Alabama is a small town in Jackson County, Alabama. The population was 1,935 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Birmingham, about 15 miles south of Birmingham's downtown core and 20 miles north of Huntsville. The name "Trussville" is derived from an Indian word meaning "place where the trees grow." The Trussville Manufacturing Company was founded in 1868 by Major General William H. Truss and his brother-in-law Luther Biddle. The company made radios and other electrical equipment; it closed its doors in 1967. In 1923, the Truss family donated land to create Trussian Village which still exists today as a community center with a grocery store, library, post office, bank and several restaurants and bars. In 1929 President Herbert Hoover visited Trussville for a speech at Birmingham High School. That year also saw the opening of Southeast High School which served as the first public school in Trussville

The Trussville Plantation was one of the largest and most extensive cotton plantations in Alabama. It continued to be operated by the Trussville family until it was sold to white settlers in 1865.
