In that year, Captain John Sevier and his crew of the brig "Alabama" were sailing from Mobile to Pensacola when they noticed a small sailboat off the coast of Florida. They fired their guns at the boat and saw it change course. They realized that they were shooting at an Indian vessel which had just come ashore from Louisiana. The next day, Sevier's ship encountered another boat coming out of Louisiana and opened fire on her. This action led to the first recorded use of gunfire by ships in coastal waters south of Cuba. The American Revolution began on February 14th, 1776, when British forces landed in Charleston Harbor with 100 cannons and 400 men to capture America's infant country. Captain Sevier was so successful in defending Mobile that he became one of the United States' most honored heroes. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during the War for Independence - an event which is now considered to be one of America's earliest military successes. Captain Sevier is buried at Fort Trussville National Cemetery in Trussville, Alabama.

Trussville is a small town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 909 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Trussville is located on US-127 and US- 31. The town began as a farming community in 1881 when local farmers purchased land east of where Trussville now stands. The first post office was established in 1882 and the first store was built in 1886. In 1905, the name of the town was changed to honor General John Pemberton who had been killed near Decatur two years earlier during World War I. In 1927, Trussville became an incorporated village under the name of Northfield after northcentral Butler County Seat Northfield had become an incorporated municipality that year. Northfield's incorporation made it an unicameral body with a Village Board and individual residents were not required to participate in any civic activities or vote unless they desired so. In 1971, all but one block of downtown were destroyed by a fire that burned for three days; this spared most of what would later be called "The Old Town" which includes portions of Main Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue NW (now Trinity Parkway), Second Street NW (now White Court), Third Street NE (now Park Road), Fourth Street NW (now Young Circle), Fifth Avenue SE (now Boulevard Drive), Sixth Avenue NE (now First Street SW). The exception was blocks 3 through 5 which were rebuilt from pre-fire materials using steel and concrete instead of woodchips and mud mortar because such construction would have violated zoning regulations then in place forbidding new erection within limits set by previous generations of settlers.. A cemetary has been built on the site since 1924 to commemorate those lost in the fire including General John Pemberton's widow Julia Pemberton as well as six children born to her late husband while he served with distinction overseas during World War I: Alice Loyd Pemberton Johnston McAfee Cushing Skinner Thaxter Stroud McClendon Easley Vance Hillenburg As part of its centennial celebration, Trussville City Council voted on December 12, 2006 to rename itself "John Paul Jones University". At press time there are no plans for any physical alterations or changes to either current or former names – only commemorative plaques will remain!

In 1877, the town of Trussville was founded on a tract of land that had been donated by Judge John W. Bradford. The town was named for General Albert Truss, who served as United States Minister to Spain during the Spanish-American War and later served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico City. In 1914, the town annexed the neighboring village of Greenfield. The population of Trussville peaked at 100 in 1920 and declined steadily until it reached its current level of around 30 in 2000.
