The Trussville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The district includes 95 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site. In 1882, John Stephenson built a sawmill and gristmill in what is now Trussville. The mill began to operate as a flour mill in 1885, and produced flour for local markets until 1907 when it became an electric power plant. In 1928, the mill was bought by J P White & Sons and continued to be operated as a flour mill until it closed in 1984. After the mill closed, many of the buildings were used for other purposes until they were all sold to various developers in 2000-2002 who rehabilitated them into housing units that are currently liveable. According to the 2010 US Census, Trussville has 2,564 residents Thus making it one of most populous small towns within Butler County (the others being Decatur with 4,362 residents). Despite this population growth over time there have been few major changes or updates to Trussville since its incorporation into municipal government on July 1st 2003 - which has seen a focus instead on improving infrastructure including new roads and intersections etc., as well as continuing development around town core including numerous new businesses/housing projects etc..

However, during the 1930s and 1940s, local manufacturing declined as industry shifted to other parts of Alabama or overseas. Today, Trussville retains some sawmills and flour mills along with several contributing historic buildings including courthouse and jail.

The town was named for General James Hunter Truss, who served as a commander of the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Revolution. In 1835, the town became a stop on the road between Mobile and Montgomery. By 1870, Trussville had become an important agricultural center with cotton plantations and small businesses. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1907 and returned to ruin until it was renovated in the 1970s and now includes a museum and several antique stores
