It is also one of the most populous towns in Covington County. The first settler in what is now Troy was Nicholas Pope who arrived on horseback from Georgia in 1819. Pope built a log cabin on the current site of downtown Troy on December 16, 1819. In 1824, he married Catharine Hargrave and together they founded Rome Township which would later become Troy Township Park. In 1830, they moved to their present location and began to grow maize and cotton crops. They also raised livestock and started a sawmill that still operates today as the Rome Mills Saw mill. In 1835, Governor George Wallace offered land for a courthouse within walking distance of Rome Township but no takers came forward so Wallace decided to build his own courthouse instead near Rome Township Park (now known as downtown Troy). The first court case to be heard in this new courthouse was an action brought by John Pemberton against Darius Dixon for stealing some goods from his farm near Rome Township Park on February 12, 1840. The jury acquitted Dixon and Pemberton celebrations were held throughout the township when news spread about this successful verdict. As part of Reconstruction Era efforts following the Civil War, General Robert Ewell established military headquarters at nearby Mound City during October 1865-December 1865 while leading Confederate troops through east Tennessee into northern Alabama trying to capture Montgomery or Atlanta respectively - all without success due largely to lack of transportation infrastructure including roads suitable for large armies across open countryside with vast reaches for searchlights/artillery/militiamen led by generals like Ewell only proved fruitless because Union forces had already crossed over into southern Mobile County by then having captured Montgomery two weeks earlier while Confederate forces were besieging Nashville much further north (the Battle of Newtonia took place four miles south of Mound City). Following Reconstruction efforts ended with black slaves being freed following passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, many African Americans migrated westward such as Augustus Price who arrived in 1870 from Illinois via Buffalo Gap outside Chattanooga with his wife Fannie White Price after Lincoln's Easter Message that year promising "all men are created equal" - heading straight towards what would become known as Memphis Tennessee just past Appomattox Court House where he purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) bordering Old Courthouse Square which later became home to Central High School until it closed down due to budget cuts back in 2000 when enrollment exceeded 100 students per class;Price singlehandedly saved Memphis’s high school system from closure when local District Attorney Donny Hathaway succeeded him years later becoming founder & CEO emeritus professor emeritus Central Middle School District football coach head basketball coach – giving up coaching career abruptly prior thereto upon announcement thereof thus becoming donnyhathawaypriorities@cmdrhs
