Troy, Alabama is an unincorporated community in Butler County, Alabama, United States. It lies on the north bank of the Mobile River, about south of downtown Mobile and east of Shiloh. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3242. The first Europeans to visit Troy were French fur traders in 1759. A store and post office were established there in 1814 by James Witherspoon and his brother-in-law David Reid. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s as cotton plantations were developed hereabouts. It became a town on October 1, 1836 when it was organized as a result of a vote by residents of nearby Marshalltown over proposed incorporation into that city. Troy experienced rapid expansion following its incorporation; by 1840 it had a population of 10,000 and had become one ofMobile's most important commercial districts. In 1851–1852 Union troops burned down several businesses in retaliation for raids conducted by Confederate forces against Mobile merchants during the War for Southern Independence; this destroyed much of what remained of Troy's business district and laid the groundwork for its subsequent decline. In 1892–1893 white settlement began to spread through northwestern Butler County as farmers displaced Native American occupants who had lived there for centuries. Negro settlement also began to spread through northern Butler County during this same period; however, it did not reach such levels until after World War II when scores of black families relocated from eastern Alabama to Troy due to discrimination against them in many local institutions and businesses

Troy is a small town located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Tennessee River between Decatur and Cullman counties. The first settlers in Troy were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1819. The community was founded by James Ransom and John Sowell, brothers of Welsh descent. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson who had recently been elected President of the United States. In 1826, the decision was made to move the post office from Damascus to Troy because of its location on the river. The community experienced growth during both World Wars as military personnel and civilians relocated to Troy for work in defense industries or government services such as intelligence gathering or food production. After the Second World War ended, many veterans returned home and started families. Today, Troy is a thriving community with a wide variety of businesses and residents that enjoy various aspects of life including arts and culture, shopping malls, parks, dining options and easy access to transportation.
Troy was founded in 1821 by the brothers John and James Troy. It became a city in 1870 and was named for General George Custer, who fought in the American Civil War.
