Troy is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 25,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. However, prior to this date, most of what is now Troy had been part of Mobile County. In 1827-28 David Thompson built a gristmill on Mud Creek near present day Troy High School which became one of the largest flour mills in America and helped start up downtown Troy during that time period; today's Mill Street corridor still bears his name (the old mill site is now an industrial park). In 1830 John Covington established another flour mill located just east of town along Mud Creek - this one became known as "Covington & Son" because two brothers operated it: John Covington Jr., who died in 1865 and his brother Joseph Covington II who continued operations until 1924; father John Covington Sr.'s death left four sons operating different parts of their father's business: Jno. P.-owned & operated main frame buildings at 168 Main St.; Geo W.-operated second floor buildings at 205 Main St.; Albert D.-operated third floor buildings at 246 Main St.; Hyrum G.-operated fourth floor buildings at 312 Main St.; all but Albert D.--now demolished--owned slaves until 1865 when they were emancipated according to law provided by Abraham Lincoln through Executive Order No.(3) In 1886 three churches were built: First Baptist Church (later renamed Holy Cross Episcopal Church), Methodist Episcopal Church (later renamed Grace Methodist Episcopal Church), and Presbyterian Reformed Churches together forming what is nowknown asFirst PresbyterianChurchAvenueandSecond PresbyterianChurchAviationStadium(formerly AlabamafairPark).
