Troy is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. Troy was platted in 1827 by entrepreneurs who were looking to find a new home for their families after they left Mobile. The town's name comes from the Troys who lived there before them and are buried in the town cemetery. The first school opened in Troy on April 25, 1830, and taught grades one through twelve. In 1857, subscriptions were collected to build a public library which served all residents of Troy as well as Decatur and rural areas around it. In 1868, voters approved a two-story school building with an addition that doubled the size of the existing school rooming house on Main Street. In 1881 voters approved a single-story frame courthouse located on Meeting Place between Second Street and Third Avenue near today's Sheriff's Department Annex Building (now known as Fourth Avenue Baptist Church). On November 6 of that year Judge J.H Rhodes announced his candidacy for Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court; he won by over hundred votes but did not take office until December 3 because term limits had already been set for justices at that time. A new courthouse was built on Second Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue starting in 1886; this structure served as both court houses until 1912 when it became simply known as the courthouse. On February 28, 1907 Representative John Lewis Payne introduced legislation which would rename Troy "Troy" after General Andrew Jackson rather than give it to Judge Rhodes because he felt that his nickname – General – would better reflect what truly constituted Troy's historical roots while still providing honor to those who had helped make it an important community

Troy is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Troy was founded on December 3, 1819 by Captain James Hance and his party of soldiers during the American Revolution. The town was named for General Sir John Forbes, who had been killed in action near present-day Troy on November 26, 1775. The first courthouse in Troy was built in 1825 and it served until 1859 when a new courthouse was built and it served until 1911 when it burned down. In 1907, an act to rename Butler County after General James Hance became law and the first street in town called "Hance Boulevard." On May 15, 1925, as part of a celebration for its 105th anniversary, Troy's mayor made history by becoming the first African American to serve as Mayor of a U.S. city with a population over 100K residents when he took office. In 1960, through an agreement with Montgomery County (Alabama), which included all but one school district within its borders, Troy merged into that county as per local ordinance passed that year. In 1975 this agreement resulted in Clanton opening their high school inside of Troy while Perrysburg closed their high school due to lack of space within the new boundaries created by merger. In 1990s two other districts – Madison South High School District #1 and Cahaba Valley Intermediate School District No 2 – amalgamated into various other schools within Clanton so that there were now four separate public schools located within downtown Troy: City College High School; Pryor Middle School; Arsenal Elementary/Secondary School; and Highland Park Elementary/Secondary School which serves students from both annexed neighborhoods east of I-10W between US 12 & 11th Ave./Highland Park Rd./US 12 & 11th Ave./Highland Park Rd./Hwy 280 East; and west side annexation between US 12 & 11th Ave./Highland Park Rd./Hwy 280 West & Glengarry Dr.; these annexations did not result in any realignment or change to student demographics since most students still attend one or more neighboring schools from home economics through science courses such as artistry/theater arts or business administration/administrative science along with technology classes like coding etc.. However some students do attend satellite middle schools located just outside their neighborhood boundaries like Oakland Hills Preparatory Academy which specializes specifically in teaching 7th thru 8th graders tech skills such as coding
Troy was founded in 1836 by a group of men who were looking for a place to build a new courthouse.
