In Troy, Alabama, the history of firearms begins with the first guns in 1838. The town was originally called "Troy" because it was located on the banks of the Tennessee River. In 1851, when Alabama became a state, Troy become its capital and soon developed into an important manufacturing center for firearms and other weapons. The first gun designed in Troy was a rifle called the Model 1851. It consisted of a stock made from cypress wood, a barrel made from black walnut, and a pistol grip that was fashioned from gray felt. Guns like these were used by local militias to protect residents during the 1830s and 1840s as Texas began to claimed parts of east Tennessee for themselves. Rifle manufacturers in nearby Athens produced similar models until around 1860 when Birmingham-based Sanborn Firearms introduced what is now known as the Model 1861 Springfield rifle in honor of General Robert Ewing Lamar (1807-1872), who had helped establish Alabama as a state in 1832. Gunmakers continued to produce rifles and pistols in Troy until after World War II when production shifted to ammunition production. Today, much of what remains of Troy's past firearm industry is found at Spartan Arms Ammunition & Gunsmithing Company which has been manufacturing ammunition since 1907.

Troy, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 548 at the 2010 census. It was founded as a post office in 1871. Troy's first store, built on the current site of the city hall, opened in 1872. The community was named for General Andrew Jackson Troy (1767-1846), an American general and president of the United States who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of Tennessee. Post office officials decided to change the name to honor General Troy because he had been so much involved with local affairs and had helped promote education and industry in Marshall County. In 1913, Russell Hargrave became the first white person to be elected sheriff of Marshall County when he ran against incumbent Wm. D. Hammonds. In 1924, townspeople voted to rename themselves after famed African American athlete Jesse Owens (1900-1968). As part of this effort, they founded Troy University which now offers undergraduate degrees in business administration and law enforcement/lawyery
