In 1830, Fenton helped organize an anti-Indian uprising known as "The Battle of Tuscaloosa." This event led to increased tensions between black Americans and white men in Alabama and throughout the US south during this time period. In 1840, Tennessee annexation madeAlabama a part of the Union; however, many African Americans still faced discrimination from whites within their own communitiesntil Reconstruction began more than 50 years later under Lincoln's presidency . Under Reconstruction legislation enacted by Congress through executive order (Equalredits Act), African American entrepreneurs were given access to education and jobs opportunities; nevertheless some continued to face discrimination even after these strides were made .
