Troy's heyday came about due to two factors: its strategic location for transportation links between north Georgia and central Alabama; and the fact that cotton could be grown here cheaply thanks to ample rainfall year round. However, during the Civil War period many residents left for Tennessee or other states due to political differences over slavery/states' rights issues (such as those surrounding voting rights). The town slowly lost its popularity in the 1870s as new settlers arrived from Alabama and Mississippi looking for opportunities more suited to their lifestyle than farming cotton soil under difficult conditions. By 1890 only a few hundred people lived in downtown Troy while 1,000–1,500 people lived on farms nearby.
