In 1892, Talladega was named after General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War. The town was first settled by farmers and their families in the early 1800s. By 1900, Talladega had a population of just over 100 people. In 1907, the Alabama Legislature renamed Talladega the county seat of Jefferson County. In 1920, Alabama set up a system of local government called a district government which gave municipalities more power to regulate their own affairs and make decisions about public works. The town became an elected township with a mayor and six-member board of trustees. On December 1, 1925, the township voted to secede from Jefferson County and become an independent city under the name of Talladega.
