Talladega, Alabama is a city located in the southeastern corner of Alabama. The population was 25,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Talladega County and has been since 1867. The name " Talladega" comes from the Choctaw word "tallahatchee," meaning place of great wooded hills or mountains. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson ordered Major James A. Butler to explore and report back on what lay between Opelika and Montgomery with a view to finding a route for military supplies through that region. Butler's survey led him to believe that there was an excellent route through the hills near present-day Talladega, and so he recommended this location for a new military post. In 1827, General Robert Ewing designated Talladega as the judicial center of all of Calhoun County (which included most of modern-day Alabama). This site served as courthouse until 1907 when it burned down in an arsonist's attack. In 1868, Congress passed legislation creating Talladega County, which now includes much of what is today Alabama but also parts of Georgia and Mississippi. At that time, there were only six counties in America: Alabamian (Calhoun), Cherokee (Ala.), Clay (Clay), Coffee (Coffee), Gilmer (Gilmer), and Osage (Osage). The original boundaries for each county were determined by Spanish land grants given to American settlers during colonial times; these boundaries changed over time as more settlers arrived in each area. The first public meeting held in Tallassee was on December 12th,1872 under the auspices ofthe Committee on Roads and Streets ofthe Houseof Representatives." On December 22nd Augustus Chapman announced his intention to open trade at Mobile Bay with Stonington Island . . . John Sibley offered $5 per acre for 100 acres along Mobile River where Fort Payne now stands." On January 10th 1830 Hernando Byars donated 5 lots "northwest side road leading from Decatur Street below First street" towards Indianola Creek

However, it reopened as an open-air museum in 2007 under new management and has continued to be used as a race circuit today
