The Talladega race track hosted the first modern auto race in 1906. It was run on a dirt course that became part of the state fairgrounds. The event helped to popularize racing in Alabama and has been held there ever since. In 1957, NASCAR added Talladega as one of its tracks permanently.
Talladega, Alabama is a small town in the judicial district of Hale County. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hale City metropolitan area. The name Talladega derives from the Creek word "tal- leda," meaning "high ground." In 1819, General Andrew Jackson and his army passed through this community on their way to Battle Creek in what is now Michigan. As they were passing through, they stopped for dinner at a white plantation owned by John Marshall Talmadge and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Smith. General Jackson's staff was so impressed with the food that they ordered all of their horses and mules taken to market so that they could purchase more supplies for their camp that night. Later that year, when Jackson's army invaded Georgia, he decided to stop at Talladega on their journey northward. He stayed for two days before continuing on to Battle Creek where he relieved General William Troup who was besieged there by Cherokees commanded by Major Ridge. At Battle Creek, General Jackson met Mrs. Talmadge and her children who lived on a plantation nearby; she showed him around her home while he conferred with Generals Stoneman and McIntosh about strategy for checking Cherokee advances towards Mobile Bay. After meeting Mrs. Talmadge, General Jackson returned home via Chattanooga where he rested before marching on to Fort Donelson where he lost control of an expedition againstn Tennessee River forces under Lt.-Colonel Robertson (the future Confederate general Jubal Early). Over time various changes took place in the community: during World War II it became known as "Talladega Army Air Base" because many American B-29 bombers used its runways as staging areas during bombing missions over Japan; after World War II most of the buildings were replaced by housing developments; since 2000 it has been known as "Talladega International Airport". Today Talladega is still a small town with a few stores and restaurants located near downtown along Alabama Avenue which offers basic goods such as groceries and gasoline station supplies without much variety or choice outside of these services
