The first permanent settler in what is now Talladega was James McMillin who arrived in 1818 with his family from Ireland. In 1830, he married Sarah Rankin and they began farming around their original cabin near present-day downtown Talladega. John Rankin eventually took over their farmstead and built the first store in town in 1836 on land that still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church on Third Street west of what is now Government Center Drive. In 1851, William Jourdan founded Jourdan's Store on Main Street west of what is now Government Center Drive where he sold goods such as saddles, horseshoes, hats, shoes and other clothing items to settlers and travelers along the Mobile River Valley. By 1860, there were ten stores operating within two miles of downtown Talladega with a total population of 125 people. In 1865, Samuel Gandy established Gandy's Drug Store on Second Avenue east of present day Court House Square south of I-565 (now Veterans Memorial Parkway). This store became one of the most popular businesses in town because it offered groceries as well as drugs for personal use by residents and visitors alike. Over time other local business owners followed Gandy's lead including Wm Haskins & Son who ran a general store at Sixth Avenue north of Court House Square from 1905 until its closure in 1932; Fenton Bros., later renamed Kress Brothers Inc.; Easley Hardware; Peebles Drugs; Hardwick Cigar Emporium; Ditto Cafe; Aiken Barber Shop & Grocery Department - later known as Ronald McDonalds Place - before finally closing down shop all together in 1984 after more than 60 years serving customers! Talladega, Alabama is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in Mobile County on the Gulf Coast of Alabama near Mobile Bay. The Talladega race track was built in 1909 by Jepson Clay and became one of the most important circuit racetracks in the United States. In 1931, it was renamed for American Motors Corporation president William Wacoal Talladega as part of a marketing campaign to promote American cars made in America. In 1955, NASCAR merged with IRL to form NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (now Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series). The first event held at the new Talladega Raceway was a Busch 500 race on January 17, 1955. The track saw its first championship-winning car when Lee Petty won his fourth championship driving teammate Darrell Waltrip's Pontiac factory team.[1] Petty also won four other championships at this track between 1975 and 1986 while driving for Penske Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing teams respectively. Other notable drivers include Bobby Labonte (four times), Darrell Waltrip (twice), Earnhardt Ganassi (once), Jeff Gordon (three times) and Matt Kenseth (one time).
On July 16, 1957, the Talladega Superspeedway was opened to automobile racing. It would be a mainstay on the motorsports calendar for over fifty years. The track is one of the most famous and well-known race tracks in the United States.
