Sylacauga is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is located on the southern edge of Birmingham suburbia and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. It is home to two high schools, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabam Community College. The town was founded in 1821 by General James Hays as a military outpost on the Appalachian Mountains separating Tennessee from Alabama. Many people who would become settlers in what became Sylacauga were brought over by General Hays' army during the American Revolution. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson nominated General John Cranch to be the first Territorial Governor of East Tennessee which included parts of present day Alabama and Georgia. When Jackson was elected president, he opposed Cranch's nomination and instead appointed George Rogers Clark as the first Territorial Governor of East Tennessee without giving any indication that Clark would serve only until his death in1839. After Clark's death, Andrew Johnson filled this role but resigned due to term limits in 1841 so that Robert Emanual Hancock could be nominated for governor with no opposition from Johnson. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Sylacauga; 11 soldiers were killed and 22 wounded before withdrawing back into Chattanooga under orders from Confederate Army general Braxton Bragg. A few weeks later Union troops burned down several homes in retaliation for this attack but it did little damage to Confederate morale or war effort overall since most militarily minded people thought their opponent had lost control over their own armies afterlagading three major cities (Chattanooga, Atlanta and Corinth) within months). Later that year Union troops burned down another home after raiding some local farms while Confederates took refuge inside a church which they then set on fire; this event led to more retaliatory attacks against Union forces throughout 1861-1865 although these raids generally did less damage than previous incidents because cotton production was now mainly conducted by slaveowners rather than individual farmers.) When General Burbridge succeeded Walker as commander of Confederate Forces west of Montgomery during 1862 he decided to move his headquarters eastward towards Huntsville instead of westward towards Chattanooga due to pressure from higher command elsewhere within Confederacy caused by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves except those working for masters who remained enslaved even though many white men had freely chosen not to join the Confederacy). When Burbridge reached Sylacauga he found abandoned buildings there as well as an abundance of food storesesianly leading him conclude that either someone had deliberately left everything available or soldiering conditions must have been quite harsh given how easy it must have been for civilians living nearby not only to survive but also thrive amidst such conditions...] Aftermath: Although much has changed since 1861 when Battle Creek Road ran through today’s downtown Sylacauga – including Coca ColaBottles being placed outside businesses following World War II - much about its early history remains unchanged today...As violent memories still linger surrounding what transpired just blocks away from where I grew up 25 years ago today my hope is that future generations will appreciate both our town’s past while also exploring its potential for redevelopment into something truly special [...]

Sylacauga is one of the largest cities in Jefferson County and home to many businesses and services. The city is also known for its annual Sylvania parade which makes its way through downtown on the first Saturday of May each year. Sylacauga's history dates back to 1819 when a group of English colonists started a farm near present-day Sylacauga. The name "Sylacauga" comes from an Alabamian word meaning "haunted place." The city was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1819 as part of their plan to spread Christianity throughout the area. The original settlers were mainly African Americans who had been brought over as slaves by white landowners. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson appointed Elijah Boudinot, an American slave trader, as mayor of Sylacauga. Boudinot did not believe that slavery should be abolished but instead he wanted to start a new society where Africans would work free and receive education and citizenship rights like other whites in America. This plan failed because most African Americans preferred to remain enslaved than move away from their homes and find new opportunities outside of slavery. In 1846, General James Kenedy ordered all black men between the ages of 15 and 30 living within his military district (the Mobile District) be brought into custody for enlistment in the Confederate Army against the Union forces during the American Civil War. Many black men chose to fight rather than leave their families behind during wartime; however, some were taken into captivity or executed after they surrendered without any chance for parole or release from slavery. After war ended in 1865, many African Americans who had fought for Confederate forces found themselves homeless or struggling financially after being freed from bondage meaning it was very difficult for them to find new jobs or housing until Reconstruction began in 1868 under Ulysses S Grant’s administration following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation which allowed former slaves freedom pursuant to law rather than plantation owners deciding they should be kept under control through violence or theft/encountering resistance from these newly liberated slaves). It wasn't until 1870 when Gideon Wellborn became Mayor of Sylacuga after winning election against two other candidates with support from businessman James Southerland Sr., son-in-law of local politician John Auld (son-in-law of Alexander Hinton)). He developed plans & ambitions For SYLACAGUAs First Black School In 1870' -still operates today as Oneonta Community College!
