Sylacauga is a town in Hale County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,937 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga was founded in 1876 by General George Armstrong Custer and his group of Seventh Cavalry soldiers as a military outpost on the Red River. It became a small market town and post office during the 19th century before becoming an agricultural center in the early 20th century. In 1873, General Custer's forces were retreating from Fort Donelson when they were ambushed by Confederate cavalry under Colonel James Fenton. General Custer died in the battle and many of his officers were killed or captured. After General Custer's death, most of his troops disbanded and returned home to their families or went into hiding. A few men remaining led what became known as "The Volunteer Army" which fought against Reconstruction efforts in Alabama after the Civil War. In 1865, General Robert E Lee ordered American forces to retreat from Mobile due to Union pressure following the Battle of Shiloh (2-29-1865). Many southern whites saw this as a sign that African Americans would not be able to play an effective role within white society and many began seeking revenge against African Americans for perceived wrongs committed during Reconstruction years. In 1876, General George Armstrong Custer and his group of Seventh Cavalry soldiers founded Sylacauga as a military outpost on the Red River with plans to establish it as a small market town with white settlers only allowed to purchase land for $1 per acre ($10 worth at that time). The first store opened in 1898 and soon there were several businesses established including mine, farm laborer general store (later renamed First National Bank), blacksmith shop, livery stable/carriage garage/four-seated buggy stop/a grocery store (later renamed Jiffy Lube) among others. By 1907 there were twelve businesses operating inside Sylacauga limits with over 960 residents living therein with over half of those residents being farmers who raised chickens or cows while 70%+of all local jobs consisted either of labor on farms or service industry such as laundry work or driving wagons carrying goods across county lines into neighboring counties during transportation timescales like Daylight Saving Time (). One reason why Sylacaja flourished during this time period was because it had easily accessible badlands which made up much of its landscape making production possible without needing lots of capital equipment like irrigation systems or roads (). These days some aspects unique about Sylacaja are its large number of antique shops located around downtown area along Macon Street ()--the only major thoroughfare in town--and its many restaurants providing both fresh food items sourced from local farms AND international cuisine (). Additionally; it has been host to annual arts festivals throughout history such as Folklife Festival (), Renaissance Festival (), Jazzfest (), etc...............................
