Selma was founded in 1868 by colonists from Georgia and named for General John C. Breckinridge, who had served as commander of Confederate forces during the American Civil War. It was re-incorporated as a town in 1907. The first post office in Selma opened on December 12, 1868, under the name "Cumberland". The name change to Selma on November 7, 1889 due to objections from nearby Decaturville over its similarity to Sherman's hometown of Cumberland, Tennessee. As with many small towns during this time period, Selma struggled to keep up with changes taking place around it: With railroad construction coming through the area and new businesses opening up (including a grocery store and hotel), local citizens started calling themselves "selmites" or "Selmas." However, despite several expansions (including annexation of portions of neighboring Marengo County), Selma never achieved much popularity until after World War II when it became known for its black community and political activism led by African American leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Elijah Muhammad and John Lewis. During World War IISelma also played an important role in helping feed Europe with goods brought back over land routes via Highway 99/International Truck Road; supplies made available after Allied troops liberated France from Nazi occupation were desperately needed by both sides within Germany before hostilities escalated into full-blown World War II. In 1957 Selma voters passed a resolution declaring September 5th "National Voter Education Day." This date has been celebrated annually ever since as National Voter Education Day to encourage voting participation among all Americans regardless of race or ethnicity. In recent years efforts have been made to integrate school systems using racial balance models beginningelementary through high school levels across America; however some communities continue to experience disparities based on race/ethnicity even though education opportunities exist nationwide that would allow these students access to better educational opportunities outside their neighborhoods
