In 1962, King James Meredith was arrested for trying to integrate Central High School in Selma. This event led to further protests and boycotts from African Americans throughout Alabama. The Black Panther Party emerged as one of the most influential organizations during this time period and worked tirelessly to support Selma's black community through peaceful demonstrations and rallies. During this time period,Selma also experienced significant violence from white supremacists who believed that integration would lead to social chaos and economic ruin for all involved parties. As a result, many people were killed or injured during these protests and boycotts. This violence is still remembered today by many Alabamians who live near or have resided in Selma over the years
Selma, Alabama is a town in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest town in Alabama and one of the most rural towns in the United States. It is home to Tuskegee Airmen Air Force Base and Selma Hospital. Selma's history goes back to 1867 when white men from neighboring Bibb County built a log cabin on what is now Selma's Main Street. A post office was established at Selma in 1875, and by 1880, a store had been opened there also. In 1903, voters approved a plan to build a courthouse near downtown Selma and named it for former Confederate General James Longstreet Jr., who had fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The new courthouse was completed in 1905 and became an important part of Selma's infrastructure. In 1957, black students attending nearby Tuskegee University staged a sit-in campaign against segregated educational opportunities in their school district; this eventually led to desegregation of education within Montgomery County (the county that included Montgomery). In 1960, after more than three years of peaceful protests against segregation by community activists and students throughout Montgomery County, civil disobedience erupted when African Americans were arrested while trying to cross into white areas of Birmingham from local shopping malls; this event is commonly known as "The Birmingham Black Bus Boycott". As a result of these events, racial tensions began to dissipate throughout Montgomery County; however, tension continued to exist between black residents of Selma and other predominately white communities acrossAlabama until 1967 when leaders from both communities made an agreement under which all people living within city limits would be considered citizens of Selmashool District 4 instead of just residents of those cities or towns cotton plantations served
