The city is named after the African American civil rights activist and U.S. Congressman John Lewis, who was imprisoned in Birmingham for nine months in 1965. In 1967, Selma became the first municipality in Alabama to integrate its public schools. Many of these events occurred during the "civil rights" era when African Americans were not allowed to vote or hold any legal authority within their own communities. Selma is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 7,123 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and is the largest city within Montgomery County by area. Selma's nickname "The City of Hope" comes from its role as a base for early civil rights protests in Birmingham, Alabama. Selma was founded by shoemaker John Wesley Hardin in 1868 on land which he donated to the town limits of Selma. The first white settler, Reuben Hinton, arrived in 1869 and built a cabin on what is now Second Street. A post office called Selma was established in 1870, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1902, Mayor George Stephenson declared Selma an incorporated city under the laws of Alabama; this proclamation set off days of celebratenment throughout the state capital cities that led to increased business and development around downtown Selma. In 1907, the first African American to be elected to public office when Montgomery became an independent municipality—the first African American mayor of any U.S.–received his certificate of incorporation from then-Mayor Stephenson atSelmachia Hall on Main Street (now Easley Drive). During World War II, Selma served as one of 10 bombing targets for Nazi Germany; during aerial bombardments over Allied positions on December 17–18 1944 known as "Bloody Sunday," many civilian deaths were caused by German bombs dropped into town center during daylight hours when most people were home with their families or working outside

In 1865, General John Fenton decided to move the military hospital from Mobile to Montgomery because of overcrowding in Mobile and health concerns about the unsanitary conditions at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. He also argued that moving the hospital would improve Montgomery's infrastructure as well as its morale given its long history of being under Confederate control. The first building for what would become Selma was built on land donated by local farmer James H. Cobb in 1875. The name "Selma" was chosen after General Fenton's wife, who had been born near Birmingham, Alabama but whose family moved toMobile when she was seven years old so her father could get an education there. In 1876, when Selma became a town, it had only 12 residents and $2 per month in property tax revenue due to lack of streets and sidewalks; however, by 1890 it had reached 25 resident families and $10 per month in property tax revenue due to increased access to water supplies, schools, churches and businesses downtown which helped makeSelma an important center for trade and commerce during this time period . In 1906 Selma sent representatives to answer questions posed by Congresswoman Lucy Stone about conditions within local black communities across America during their hearings on equal rights for all Americans called "The Dred Scott Case." During World War I (1914-18), Selmas civic organizations made donations totaling over $5 million dollars towards munitions production with many businesses like Sears Roebuck donating materials used in war plants around the country; these efforts helped increase wartime production by 50%. After World War II (1939-1945), Selmas economy began to decline as industries closed down throughout southernAlabama following the war with little new investment or jobs available outside of defense work such as aluminum smelting or truck manufacturing; however postwar growth did occur with some new development including a shopping mall built adjacent to City Hall in 1949 followed by heavy industry such as auto assembly beginning around 1955 until those industries departed during desegregation later that decade .
