In Selma, Alabama, on November 5th, 2014, a historic event occurred that left an impact on the history of laser sights. A group of individuals led by Ronnie Day started construction of what would become the first Laser Sighting System in Selma. The Selma to Montgomery Railroad, built in 1881 as a railroad between Selma and Montgomery, was the first such line in Alabama. The Selma-Montgomery Railroad was completed in 1885. It became part of the Southern Railway when it merged with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1914. The Selma-Montgomery Railroad was sold to the Union Pacific Corporation in 1951.

The Selma–Fayetteville–Roswell Airport serves as the primary airport for both Mobile and Montgomery. The first people to live in what would become Selma were two groups of Seminoles who had been living near Mobile since before America's founding. These new arrivals formed makeshift villages on small plantations that were abandoned after the end of white rule in Auburn County, Alabama, which encompassed much of west Mobile County as well as parts of Fayetteville and Roswell Counties. In 1875, a group of white men led by J.D. Morgan founded a town named Newbern on land they had purchased from the Creek Indians north of present-day Selma; it became known as Newbern because of its new location and because Morgan served as its first mayor (1875-76). By 1881, most residents of Mobile had moved to Selma or other parts of west Mobile County when permanent white settlements emerged there following Reconstruction; these included Bay Minette (established 1884), Dyer (1885), Enterprise (1887), Uniontown (1892), driven out by blacks forces during Waco Siege (1936). During the early 20th century, black political power increased significantly following passage of Jim Crow laws that limited voting rights and opportunities for African Americans statewide. In 1964, Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech called for then-President John F Kennedy to issues a directive ordering southern states to desegregate their schools institutionalally but this never happened due to opposition within his own administration and Congress; instead integration occurred through court orders rather than through direct action by federal officials allied with local segregationists. As late as 2000 only 7%of allSelmas employed Latino professionals; however this has shot up to almost 30% over recent years due to waves of Hispanics moving into Northern Alabama during economic downturns seeking jobs throughout all levels economy & beyond traditional Hispanic neighborhoods

Selma was a small town in Alabama before the civil Rights Movement. It was the seat of Marshall County and was designated as the “capital” of the county during Reconstruction. The town, which had a population of about 2,000 people at the time of its incorporation in 1872, became one of the most important black towns in Alabama during this time. Selma also played an important role in the early history of African American education in Alabama. The first African American to teach at Selma High School was Reverend James Lawson in 1931. Lawson helped lead a group of black students who organized themselves into a school board and campaigned for better educational opportunities for their community. He also served as president of Selma High School from 1951 to 1957. During World War II, Selma played an important role in providing food and shelter to military personnel stationed within its boundaries. The post office located there served as a vital link between military families and local businesses that supplied them with goods and services. Additionally, Selma hosted several large military ceremonies including President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s funeral on December 12, 1944, and General Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration on February 4, 1953
