In 1972, Selma experienced significant violence during white nationalist protests against affirmative action programs throughout the United States which climaxed with a police shooting of an African American teenager named Timothy King. This event led to increased concern over race relations in America and spawned a number of reform movements spearheaded by black Americans such as Malcolm X who called for social justice in America.
