Selma, Alabama was founded in 1881 as a town of 5,000 people. By the early 1960s, it had become a city of over 100,000 people and was one of the most segregated places in America. The Selma to Montgomery bus boycott began on April 1, 1965, and lasted for three months. During this time, transportation between Selma and Montgomery was by bus. On December 11th, 1965, eight African American students were arrested when they boarded a bus from Selma to Montgomery. This event is known as the “March on Montgomery”. On February 4th 1969,[5] an unarmed black man named Vernon Jordan died after being shot by white officers during an arrest near Memphis (Tennessee). This case is considered one ofliest examples of police brutality against blacks in America. As a result of this atrocity, many African Americans in Alabama lost their homes and livelihoods and were forced into labor on plantations or farms during the war.* After the war ended, many black former Confederates who had served in high-ranking positions within the Confederacy returned home toAlabama. They began substantial reconstruction efforts which included restoring public services such as education and healthcare that had been destroyed during the war.* However, these efforts faced significant resistance from white supremacists who saw Reconstruction as an affront to their way of life*. Some notable figures associated with Reconstruction include Booker T Washington*, Al Smith*, Huey P Newton* (founder of Black America Foundation)* and W C Marshall*.
