Selma is a town located in central Alabama. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Selma A. King, an African American woman who was one of the first to be arrested and tried foroved from her home in Selma, Alabama during the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. The bus boycott started on December 1st, 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white person. As a result, 10 people were arrested and 9 charged with disorderly conduct and rebellion against authority. Nine of those people were African Americans: Selma A. King, Vernon Jordan Jr., Ethel Kennedy, Anna Johnson (the widow of John F Kennedy), James Hood, Alphonse Thomas and Willie Horton. King had been living in Birmingham since she migrated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1941. When she heard about the planned protest outside of Montgomery city hall on December 1st she decided to come down and help out where she could be involved--though her husband at that time worked for segregated transportation company buses in Montgomery. When King got there she found out that the large crowd had already gathered before they knew about what was happening outside City Hall; however it didn't seem like anything would happen because Mayor George Wallace had already promised not to let any black people participate in the protest without his permission(although he later changed his mind). King then decided that instead of waiting around for someone else to do something they should start things themselves by forming a line behind City Hall so that other citizens could see how powerful they actually were(and teach young black men a lesson too). That's when police reinforcements arrived and began arresting everyone who got within 5 feet of City Hall while protesters remained free as long as they stayed clear of Law Enforcement Officers... which eventually led to some violence between protesters and law enforcement officers as well as some property damage done by both sides(about $5 million dollars worth total). Aftermath: Many people died due to injuries sustained during or soon after the boycott including Selma A KING (45 years old) shot dead just blocks away from where shehad fought back against state troopers with nonviolent resistance

Selma, Alabama is a small town located in central Alabama. The population was 9,418 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Marshall County. Selma has a long history dating back to the 1800s. The first European settlers in Selma were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795. They built a trading post on the Racine River and called it Fort St.Jean de la Touche. The fort was abandoned by 1802, but traces of it still remain today. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson visited Selma and ordered Cap Huntington to build a store there for new settlers in Marshall County. As soon as Huntington finished building his store, he donated land to make way for it on which Selma now stands. In 1825, John Lowndes founded an academy in Selma with the intention of educating African Americans like himself and other freedmen about white society and American culture. Lowndes also built churches throughout the town and named them after saints or biblical figures such as Samson (Church of Saint Mary), Jeremiah (Church of God), Jesus Christ (Church of All Nations), etcetera). The cotton industry became important in Selma during this time period because slaveowners could not afford to buy enough slaves to produce crops that could be sold on their own property. To keep slaves from running away or becoming freedom fighters, many owners had them manured with fertilizer so they would die slowly from natural causes instead of being killed immediately when they ran away or attempted escape. By 1830, over 50% of the households in rural Marshall County were composed of African Americans ; this percentage increased to 75% by 1850. Many black men worked as sharecroppers because they could not own property themselves- even if they did have some landowning relatives who would let them use their resources for farming purposes- but these options only lasted until after Reconstruction when laws were passed making plantation life much harder for blacks than before without any recompense given by President Ulysses S Grant Sr.. A major factor contributing to high levels of poverty among black residents was lack of education opportunities available through public schools while white residents enjoyed more access to education thanks specifically to vouchers which allowed white families living outside local school districts pay for educational services within their own communities – something that continues today with charter schools .
