In 1955, Dr Martin Luther King Jr., who had grown up in nearby Tuskegee Institute, moved to Selma to become active in civil rights work before being assassinated two years later while speaking at a bus boycott rally outside of Birmingham Airport. After his death, many people came to Selma to remember him and celebrate his memory throughout the 1960s and 1970s; this led to increased interest in Selma both nationally and internationally as a place where history could be experienced firsthand. In 2007,Selma was designated as an International historical center by UNESCO due its presence as a key stage in American racial violence against African Americans during that era More recent events have included protests against Republican state senate candidate Roy Moore after he was accused of sexual assault with children (an accusation which he denies), and demonstrations surrounding President Trump's inauguration Saturday night
