Selma is named after Dr. Samuel Selma and his wife Amelia Murchison Griggs Payne in 1892 when they purchased a tract of land from the Creek Nation for $5 per acre. The first post office in Selma was established on October 3, 1894. The town was renamed after Dr. Samuel Selma and Mrs. Amelia Murchison Griggs Payne upon their purchase of a larger tract of land two miles east of present daySelma from the Creek Nation for $10 per acre in 1895; this property extended to what now forms most of downtownSelma. Dr. Samuel Selman's death certificate lists both he and his wife as authors with co-authors Seward & Weed who are also listed as proprietors of medicines store #2 which stands today at 7th Avenue NW and Center Street NW still in operation today as "The Pharmacy" known then as Brown Drugs until it became J&J Drugs in 1999; however according to oral history historian James Cagle this pharmacy may actually have been founded by pharmacist Johnnie Hill who operated it out of a small building near current day PPL Park before moving to his original location west across 7th Ave from what is now J&J Drugs across First Ave NE: This initial development along what becomes Seventh Avenue NW between Center Street (now National Mall) NW and Allen Parkway SW would become one of Birmingham's most vibrant neighborhoods with many businesses existing down to just one floor or less including banks like Jardine Securities Company (#1 on photo), Real Estate Company (#2), Masonic Temple Lodge #442 (the oldest extant Masonic temple still standing within city limits), Grocery Store #4141 (later becoming Safeway) -all soon joined by other stores including Home Depot later that decade; even Today there are several small businesses remaining downtown including Local Credit Union which occupies an entire block bounded by Broadway/7th Ave NE/National Mall SW/First Ave NE
