Selma, Alabama is a city in the US state of Alabama. The population was 61,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Selma County. Selma is located on the Gulf Coast ofAlabama and has a humid subtropical climate, typical of much of the region. The town was founded by African Americans in 1892 as a small fishing village named "Moses" after Moses Wells, an elder freedman who had been living there since 1881. Growth stopped after World War II because of high taxes and competition from nearby Mobile; by 1990 Selma's population was only 54,723. In 1965 Mayor George Wallace announced his candidacy for governor of Alabama; he won but lost to incumbent Averell Harriman two years later. In 1977 Wallace again ran for governor but this time he failed to win any votes outside Alabama's white majority and resigned from politics rather than face impeachment proceedings that were potential if he lost to Democratic challenger Don Siegel in November 1978. In 2000 Selma voters passed Measure 4 which mandated racial segregation in all public housing developments statewide within one year if it were not reversed by court order or code amendment before 2020; this led to boycotts and violence against blacks throughout much of central Alabama beginning in early 2001 until finally successful ratification by the state legislature in May 2002[1] (the so-called "segregation law"). This event helped spur national attention to issues around race in America during what became known as “The Great American Movement” preceding protests at Burning Man Unite Earth 2006 (Black Rock Desert), Standing Rock Sioux Tribe protestscamp 2014 (Dakota Access Pipeline), Ferguson Missouri unrest police shooting December 2015 (National Guard open fire) etc...
