Scottsboro, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836 and named for John Scotts, an early settler. Scotch-Irish immigrants had come to the area in search of land that would not be taken by white people. In 1835, Scottsville was established as a post office within the new town. In 1840, parts of what is now Scottsboro were acquired by nearby Cullman and moved to their current location; this process continued until all of present-day Cullman County became part of Jefferson County in 1871. The original churches in the town were built between 1836 and 1840s as Presbyterian and Baptist Churches respectively; however they are no longer extant. In 1861, during American Civil War effort against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee, Union soldiers burned down three homes in what is now Scottsboro while on military duty near its current location. This event is also cited as one reason why (at least some) residents expelled from the community took up arms against the Union army when it arrived after the war ended six years later. After Reconstruction era ended withthe end of slavery in America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1865,[1] most African Americans left Scottsboro for either northern or other southern sites where labor could be found without fear of retribution from former slaveowners or state officials who felt they had been wronged by emancipation.[2] However, a few black families remained until around 1950 when most blacks left for better job opportunities elsewhere inAlabama or Tennessee[3]. Some descendants of those original African Americans still live scattered throughout Northeast Alabama today where they farm cotton and keep livestock

Scottsboro was a small town in Alabama that was the site of a large train accident on February 14, 1931. The train involved 11 passengers and crew members, who were killed. The crash is still remembered to this day. The accident took place on a track that ran through Scottsboro. At the time of the crash, the track was in disrepair and had been neglected for years. As a result, the tracks were wet and slippery from years of rain and snow. Additionally, there was no guardrail or fence around the tracks, which made it easy for cars to fall off them. As a result of these factors, the train careened into a ditch near the town square. Eleven people died as a result of the crash- seven of whom were students from Scottsboro High School. Three other people (including one man who had just left work) also died as a direct result of the wrecking. Today, there is an annual memorial service for those lost in accidents at Scottsboro High School called "The Day We Remember." In addition, steel plates have been placed at each corner ofthe square wherethe accident occurred in order to remember those who lost their lives that day.
Scottsboro was a small town in Alabama before the county was split in two in 1901. The town was located on the banks of the Holston River and it is now part of Scottsboro County.
