The town has a population of about 1,000 people and is home to the Scottsboro High School football team. The town was the site of an infamous train crash that occurred on March 15, 1931. Eight young African American men were riding in a freight car when it derailed and overturned near Scottsboro Village. Five of the boys (including two teenagers) died as a result of their injuries. The survivors were taken to nearby Montgomery for medical treatment before being sent back to Scottsboro for trial. Three adults - one man and two women - also died as a result of their injuries. At the time of the crash, Montgomery had been control over all transportation in Escambia County and had refused requests from local officials to allow black immigrants into the city limits. This decision led to significant tension between blacks and whites in the area, which would continue until integration began occurring throughout Alabama during World War II.

Scottsboro was a small town in Alabama that was the site of a fateful plane crash on September 11, 1935. The crash killed three students and injured twenty-one others. The tragedy has been remembered by many people ever since. The town of Scottsboro is located in lost county, Alabama, about an hour east of Birmingham. It was founded by Scotsmen in 1856 and quickly became a settlement known for its tobacco farming and iron ore mining operations. In 1933, the area went through a significant change when two American Airlines planes crashed into the mountains near Scottsboro Village. One aircraft hit an early morning peak while the other crashed into a field after losing altitude and descended INTO THE GASTROINTESTING WILDERNESS OF THIS AREA! Three students were killed instantly as well as all but one pilot who survived to tell his story fifty years later. The land around Scottsboro had long been inhabited by Native Americans before white settlers arrived in what is now Alabama in the late eighteenth century. By 1836, Scotsman Alexander McGowan had erected a log cabin within miles of where today’s Scottsboro village stands. By 1850, there were more than 100 Scotchmen living in this region with businesses such as tobacco farming, iron ore mining and shipbuilding conducting their affairs under one roof. By 1873, whisky production had become an important part of life here; it would continue to be so until Prohibition ended seventy years later. Despite being surrounded by hostile territory at best times during most of its history (the Cherokees regularly attacked these Scotsmen), Scottsboro did manage to prosper despite various challenges over time including natural disasters (such as floods that destroyed crops) and political instability which led to intermittent civil unrest between landowners and tenant farmers alike. On September 11th 1935, three students from nearby Vestavia Hills School were flying home on American Airlines Flight #2 when their plane collided with another aircraft over the nearby mountainside while descending into disputed airspace above Scottsboro Village! All three passengers died instantly as well as both pilots! Forty-six people were injured – many seriously – including eleven children who were onboard the airliner when it impacted terrain outside of town limits minutes after takeoff! There are several theories surrounding what could have caused this catastrophic accident; some suggest that human error may have been responsible for both crashes while others believe that air travel during those days was very unsafe!!! Despite this lack of clarity or certainty surrounding exactly what happened that day thirty-five years ago…the memories of those affected remain incredibly powerful!!!!!!!!
