Scottsboro was founded on December 1, 1868 by Scots-Irish Americans working on the railroad near present-day Hoover Dam. The community was originally named "Cleveland" after Cleveland, Ohio. When the railroad opened up and saw potential for business in what were then rural areas of Butler County, officials decided to name the town after one of their own businesses - Scottsboro Brewery - which had opened in 1865 in nearby Decatur. A post office called Scottsboro was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Scottsboro opened its doors on November 12, 1870; it became known as Brownsville School District No. 2 when it merged with other districts from Butler and Tuscaloosa counties that year. According to the 2010 census, just over half of Scottsborough's population (53%) lives within a five-mile radius of downtown Birmingham or its surrounding suburbs; 27% lives within ten miles of downtown Birmingham or its surrounding suburbs; and 11% lives within twenty miles of downtown Birmingham or its surrounding suburbs. Additionally, nearly two thirds (67%)of residents identify themselves as white Protestant; only 13% describe themselves as black Protestant or Muslim/Islamist while 3% are Catholic. Overall life expectancy is 79 years according to2010 US Census figures – well above average for inland regions across America where life expectancies range from 66 to 78 years old according to similar surveys done between 1990 and 2008
