Scottsboro was a small town in Alabama that was located on the borders of Tuscaloosa and Montgomery counties. The community was originally founded in 1892 by Scottsboro's first white settlers, who named it after their hometown of Scottsville, Scotland. The settlement grew rapidly, and by 1916 it had a population of around 100 people. However, during World War I Scottsboro came under occupation by the United States military, and as a result its residents were forced to join the service or leave the town entirely. By the end of the war, however, most of the original settlers had died or gone away, leaving only a handful of survivors behind. In 1919 Scottsboro proper was annexed by Tuscaloosa County; however, due to its small size it continued to be governed independently until 1974.
