In 1884, four white men were arrested for the crime of lynching a black man in Scottsboro, Alabama. The men were later released and their trial was postponed due to lack of evidence. However, on September 15, 1885, the men were again arrested and charged with murder after they killed an African American named John Fagan. They were tried and found guilty but received only 6 years in prison before being pardoned by President James K. Polk. The Scottsboro case is associated with the Second Civil War because many of the accused men had Confederate military service. In 1963, three of the defendants—Johnnie Cochran, Clarence Darrow and Joe Hill—were convicted of rape and murder in connection with the death of five young girls at a party in Mississippi; however, they all received sentences that ranged from life to death. It is the county seat of Cullman County and home to Scottsboro National Military Park. The town was founded in 1872 by Confederate veteran James W. "Scotty" Moore and his wife Fannie Mae Moore. The Moore family had come from Mobile, Alabama, some twenty miles south of Scottsboro on U.S. 41 (later US 31). They built a log cabin on a small creek which they named after their son-in-law Johnnie Cochran who had been shot down near Chattanooga two years earlier while serving as an artillery officer with General Sherman's army during the American Civil War. In 1874, the local school board decided to move the school from Mobile to Scottsboro because that was where most of the white people were located in Cullman County at that time. The first school building was erected on Main Street in 1875; it served as both the public and private schools for many years before being replaced by what is now the municipal building in 1955. According to one source, when Scotchtown came into existence there were only about 40 residents total; however by 1880 there were 300+ residents living within walking distance of town square or shopping areas like grocery stores and hardware stores nearby - all thanks to the success of local post office operations like those at Sayre's Store and Sells' Store which functioned as mail delivery points for residents throughout much of this period! One interesting fact about early Scottsboro is that one third of its citizens were African Americans!
