Scottsboro was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1819 and became a railroad town in 1915. It has been called "the little corner of America" because of its location on the corridor that connects Nashville with Atlanta and Birmingham. The community's name comes from the Scotts Creek Valley, which ran through it. The creek empties into Mobile Bay near downtown Montgomery. At one time, parts of Scottsboro were covered with pine trees and there were extensive plantations used for cotton production until 1885 when an act of Congress made land available for schools in what is now Scottsboro. Prior to this, most school children attended homeschooling or private academies until about 1850 when public education began to be offered through local churches and schools District No 3 (Montgomery) was established in 1855 with four teachers; James Ritchie as Superintendent; Rev John Witherspoon as Principal; Mr Charles Spriggs as Assistant Superintendent; while School District No 4 (Lauderdale) had six teachers including Mrs Jane Henson (later Mrs John Fenton). In 1865 two new towns were founded within the district: Scotchtown on the north side of town limits and Hardinville on the south side just outside city limits which became known as Hardinville Junction after General James Biddle Hardin who served as governor of Alabama during Reconstruction. One hundred fifty acres (0 hectare) east of town limits lay more developed areas known today as Hoover Street between East Broad Street and North Main Street, present day Jeanes Avenue between these streets extending from Brush Mountain into neighbouring Scott Township. In 1895 a post office was established at Scottsboro utilizing letters sent from other communities along Railroad Avenue such as Jonesborough on James River where mail service ceased after November 8th 1865 due to Confederate military action against Union forces occupying Charleston South Carolina before that community could open their doors to residents on that date despite requests by Governor Andrew Johnson seeking their assistance due to military activity happening then inside that state also within his state boundaries however this request was not honored since he considered them citizens of Confederate Alabama not Unionists like himself so orderly destruction or surrender rather than allowing them access postal services again would have been much more palatable to him personally even if it means less mail reaching him during those difficult times especially given his role in getting controlofthe Southern states following their emancipation from slavery
