The town was originally part of Cullman County and became a part of Montgomery County when Montgomery was absorbed into Alabama in 1901. Today, Scottsboro is a small community located within Montgomery County. It has a population of only around 1,000 people. The history of Scottsboro began with the birth of James Fenton in 1836. Fenton came from an old Scots-Irish family which had lived in what is now Scottsboro since the 17th century. Fenton married Martha Alexander, who also came from an old Scots-Irish family. They set up home near present day Scottsboro and started farming their land. In 1837, they bought some acreage north of the village for $200 dollars and started to build a house on it. They named their new home “Scottsborough” after their Scotch-Irish ancestors who had settled there before them. The early settlers in Scottsboro were mostly farmers who grew crops and raised livestock along with hunting and fishing Adventures during their time hereabouts; but soon afterward developed into manufactures: A cotton millinery belonging to Mrs Beall & Co., erected on Main street (now called Pettus avenue), while others commenced erection of dwellings upon lots situatcd just eastward thereof (now Webster avenue). All these developments took place during the 1830s–40s; but no trace remains today of either its primary or later activities
